Andy Enfield’s USC basketball team put its finishing touches on the 2017 recruiting class Thursday with the signing of Charles O’Bannon Jr.

The son of former UCLA player Charles O’Bannon, the latest Trojan goes by ‘Chuck’ and becomes the first USC signee to have played in the McDonald’s All-American game since DeMar DeRozan in 2008. He signed his National Letter of Intent after having been previously committed to the Trojans since December.

“Chuck is an excellent all-around basketball player who is a great fit for our system,” Andy Enfield said in a press release. “We are excited to add his offensive explosiveness and his size and length at the guard position.”

All-around is the key for the O’Bannon, as he’s a 6-foot-5 swingman who can play both shooting guard and small forward. In a lot of ways, that makes him a potential replacement for Bennie Boatwright, a ‘stretch four’ by NBA standards with range to slot all over the court in Enfield’s system.

O’Bannon, out of Bishop Gorman in Las Vegas, ranks as the No. 41 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite, and the 10th-rated shooting guard. He joins a class ranked 25th in the 247Sports Composite, and already featuring early signings of four-star guard Jordan Usher and three-star 7-footer Victor Uyaelunmo.

As of now, here’s how the Trojans’ personnel shapes up going into next season…

2017-18 Scholarship Roster:

  • G Jonah Matthews, SO
  • G Jordan McLaughlin, SR
  • G De’Anthony Melton, SO
  • G Derryck Thornton, RS-SO
  • G Jordan Usher, FR
  • F Harrison Henderson, SO
  • F Chimezie Metu, JR
  • F Charles O’Bannon Jr., FR
  • F Nick Rakocevic, SO
  • F Victor Uyaelunmo, FR

Declared for the NBA Draft:

  • G Shaqquon Aaron, RS-JR
  • F Bennie Boatwright, JR
  • G Elijah Stewart, SR

Players who have declared for the NBA Draft but do not have an agent have until 2:00 p.m. PT on June 12 to withdraw their entry into the draft pool and return to college. As it stands, none of Aaron, Boatwright or Stewart have signed with a player agent.

That’s big for the Trojans, as none are expected to get drafted. With Chimezie Metu already announcing his intentions to return, a reversal from Boatwright and/or Stewart would anchor the 2017-18 team into one many see as a dangerous out.

Aaron Torres of FOX tweeted earlier in the week that USC could theoretically start in the Top 10 if Boatwright returns. He’s not alone, as the Way-Too-Early rankings right after the Final Four had the Trojans in the ballpark.
