Max Browne and Sam Darnold will continue to battle for USC’s starting quarterback this fall, but Browne has done enough to prove he’s worthy of the job.
The starting quarterback position at USC will take care of itself at the appropriate time. With experience being the determinate factor early on, most analysts fully expect a seasoned Max Browne to eventually be named starter at some point during fall camp.
To be fair, the fact that neither Browne nor Darnold was able to separate themselves from one another is a testament to how impressive Darnold have thus far been.
While it seems unlikely that he’ll unseat Browne as the starting quarterback, the possibility does remain, and with said possibilities exist questions surrounding the future of Browne were such a scene to occur.
Would Browne ask for a transfer? Could he possibly suit up for another team, ultimately lining up against these very Trojans, those whose respect he has earned in the trenches, as well as for the way he’s carried himself off the field since coming to the Land of Troy?
For the sake of argument let’s say Darnold does indeed supplant Max Browne as the number one signal caller. What would the potential fallout be?
If a transfer wasn’t requested during the turmoil following sanctions, which surrounded the entire program, and coaching instability, I don’t see Browne requesting a transfer now with competition stiffer than anticipated.
Having been tested in ways few student athletes could fathom, much less endure, I also fully expect Max Browne to assume the mantle of starting quarterback for the USC Trojans with zero chance of a platoon.
Having bucked the trend of transferring at the first, second or third hints of adversity, Browne has certainly lived up to the expectations that come from being the top-rated quarterback off of the field. His quest to validate those very same accolades on the field begins in earnest come September 3rd.

His quiet determination and confidence will serve the Trojans well in 2016 as they chase the Pac-12 crown and a berth in the College Football Playoffs.
And while Darnold will have every opportunity to pen his name among the pantheon of Trojan greats, he’ll have to be a bit more patient, while increasing his grasp and command of the offense.
To say the future behind center at USC looks bright, would be putting it lightly.
about it, USC is family. And Browne is part of that family.
