It was a big night for the Seattle Seahawks who captured the Lombardi Trophy with a dominant 43-8 victory over the Denver Broncos. By extension, it was also a great night for the USC Trojans who were well represented on the winning side by former head coach Pete Carroll and former Trojan linebacker and Super Bowl MVP Malcolm Smith.
Here’s how Twitter saw the action…
Bryan Fischer pointed out the improbable journey Smith took to his Super heights:
Malcolm Smith was 12 picks away from being Mr. Irrelevant. Now Super Bowl MVP.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) February 3, 2014
Dave Mahler of Sportsradio 950 KJR offered additional backstory on Smith, including a recent tragedy and the motivation it provided:
Malcolm Smith named MVP. His Uncle died a few days ago. He told me he wanted to win it for him.

Michael Lev of the Orange County Register reached into the archives for the inside story on Smith’s rare eating disorder:
Here's a story I wrote about Malcolm Smith in '10. He suffers from a rare disorder of the esophagus called achalasia. http://t.co/cmGUkWUeOp

ESPN offered some stats to put Smith’s production on the night in context:
Malcolm Smith is the first player in Super Bowl history with an interception return TD and a fumble recovery in the same game.
— ESPN Stats & Info (@ESPNStatsInfo) February 3, 2014
USC Athletics presented a more personal statistic:
USC alums @MalcSmitty and @SteveSmithWR are the 7th set of siblings to each win a Super Bowl. #FightOn #USCtotheNFL

Meanwhile, Smith’s postgame press conference got interrupted by a 9/11 Truther:

When it came to Carroll, Twitter had plenty to say as well.
CBS’s Dennis Dodd pointed out Carroll’s elite company:
Pete Carroll with 2 national champs and 1 Super Bowl. Only other coaches to win titles in college and pro -- Jimmy Johnson, Barry Switzer
— Dennis Dodd (@dennisdoddcbs) February 3, 2014
USC Athletics noticed the Trojan theme on the evening:
Marcus Allen to hand the Lombardi Trophy to Pete Carroll and the USC-Hawks. How perfect is that? #USCtotheNFL
— USC Trojans (@USC_Athletics) February 3, 2014
Fischer again provided the angle on the journey:
Why has Pete Carroll been so successful the past 12 years? He’ll probably point to getting fired from the Patriots.
— Bryan Fischer (@BryanDFischer) February 3, 2014
New USC head coach Steve Sarkisian came out of Twitter hibernation to offer his congratulations to his coaching mentor:
@PeteCarroll what a fantastic job! A well deserved accomplishment to an amazing coach and mentor. The power of positivity can't be stopped!
— Steve Sarkisian (@CoachSark) February 3, 2014
Finally, a USC fan joined the entire Trojan family in giving credit where credit was due:
#USC's motto is "PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT." Let whoever earns the palm bear it. It belongs to Pete Carroll, Malcolm Smith, and all #Trojans
