All-Time Series: 0-0

In the opening game of the Battle 4 Atlantis Tournament, the USC Trojans will face the Tigers of West Alabama at the Galen Center. With a victory, the Trojans will have won four home games in a row for the first time since 2010. A win would also give USC a 4-1 record to start the season for the first time since 2008.

West Alabama plays in the Division II Gulf South Conference. They have started the season with a record of 1-1. Last year, they finished 10-16. From that team they return two starters, including senior guard Sandy Underwood.

Underwood, a preseason All-GSC selection, leads the Tigers with an average of 28.5 points a game. He is shooting 55.3% from the field and 84% from the free throw line.

Also at guard, Desmond Raymond is West Alabama’s second leading scorer as well as the Tigers’ leading rebounder and top creator of assists. He averages five rebounds and six assists per game.

The Trojans will be without last year’s leading scorer J.T. Terrell due to academic ineligibility. That means even more pressure will be place on this year’s leading scorer, Byron Wesley, to provide the spark that makes the USC offense go.

As has been the case for most of this early season, Omar Oraby will have a clear height advantage over the opposition. In this case, the advantage is particularly present, as West Alabama’s tallest starter measures in at 6-6.

USC will also look for Julian Jacobs, Nikola Jovanovic and other freshmen contributors to increase their already impressive run. Jacobs already leads the Trojans in assists. In the past three games, Jacobs, Jovanovic, Roschon Prince and Kahlil Dukes, all freshmen, have combined to score 70 points.
