USC football officially announced new uniforms for the 2016 season Monday, debuting the Trojan key pattern and new collar and cuffs for home and away jerseys.

It’s official. USC football will wear slightly updated uniforms for the 2016 season, the Trojans revealed with a video first look at the new designs.

“Respect the past, represent the future,” was the motto employed by Nike in modernizing the uniforms.

USC’s new home jersey had already been teased by offensive lineman Zach Banner earlier this year, with a Greek key pattern added to the collar in line with the Trojans’ athletics department rebrand.

In the video, Nike’s Josh Iverson also noted the switch to the mache speed design which uses tougher materials and chain mesh for improved ventilation. The numbers have also been updated to match new athletics department fonts.

The biggest change is on the white away uniforms which now feature a cardinal collar and sleeve cuffs. Like the home jersey, the away’s collar incorporates the key pattern.

Rumors had swirled over the weekend that USC would be moving towards this design, with the confirmation made fairly quickly by the Trojans.

The away collar harkens back to USC uniforms from the late 1980s, but is the most drastic uniform update the Trojans have undergone since Pete Carroll opted to wear throwback uniforms with shoulder stripes instead of arm bars.

USC fans are vehemently opinionated about the traditional Trojan uniform. Though Nike and USC have toyed with using alternates or changing the cardinal and gold color scheme, little more than chroming up the helmets has been attempted.

Said helmets went unmentioned in USC’s unveiling of the new uniforms, suggesting they will not be making an appearance this season.

The Trojans will truly have a fresh start in 2016, with a newish head coach and matching newish uniforms. They’ll take the field for the first time in them on September 3rd against Alabama in the Cowboys Classic at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Tex.
