USC revealed the incredible story of Josh Shaw’s heroic rescue of his young cousin over the weekend and resulting high ankle sprains Monday and the tale is now making the rounds across national media platforms.
Shaw leaped from a second story balcony to come to the aid of his seven-year-old nephew, who was drowning in the pool below. The fall resulted in high ankle sprains in both of Shaw’s legs but he nonetheless was able to crawl into the pool and pull the child out of the water and to safety.
Now Shaw is out indefinitely as USC approaches the season opener against Fresno State and will likely miss the first half of the season as he recovers.
As usual, the twitterverse poured in responses to both the heroism and the injury. Here’s the best of the commentary:
We wish Josh Shaw a speedy recovery. Not only a great football player, one of the better people you will come across. pic.twitter.com/5vyPcl50MG

Josh Shaw was really excited for this season. 5th year with 5 different DC's, DB coaches, & defensive schemes. Named a captain too. #USC

I'd be surprised if we see Shaw on the field before midseason w/two high ankle sprains. But he'll be Coach Shaw until then. #USC

If Josh Shaw jumped from a second story balcony onto concrete, he’s pretty lucky to just have two high ankle sprains.

#USC fans need to send Coach Ivan some gift baskets. He's the unsung hero in all of those. Dunno if you've seen Shaw recently, but yeah...

... There's a reason that Shaw walked away with only a couple of high-ankle sprains. Strength and conditioning works wonders.

I'd expect Hawkins/Seymour to start at CB for #USC w/ Shaw hurt. Maybe Adoree' Jackson goes to full-time CB. Also will use 3-safety nickel.
