Five-star quarterback Matt Corral has reportedly decommitted from the 2018 USC Football recruiting class, per 247Sports and others.

USC Football’s summer recruiting has taken an unexpected turn with the news that five-star quarterback Matt Corral has backed off his pledge to the Trojans.

Tom Loy of 247Sports was the first to report the decommitment. Others have since confirmed the report.

The recent transfer to Long Beach Poly was one of the top prospects in USC’s 2018 recruiting class.

Rated as the No. 2 pro-style quarterback in the class and the No. 17 recruit overall, per the 247Sports composite, Corral was expected to come in and compete for the starting job right away if Sam Darnold were to leave for the NFL after the 2017 season.

Now the Trojans will have to look elsewhere for more competition at the quarterback spot.

Unattached quarterbacks are hard to find this year. Though USC has extended a scholarship offer to four-star QB Jack West, the Saraland-product is committed to Stanford. The Trojans could also pursue four-star Mission Hills passer Jack Tuttle, but he is currently committed to Utah.

If USC fails to fill Corral’s place in the class, the Trojans could be left with limited options in the event Darnold departs early. Former three-star prospect Matt Fink is the most veteran option at the position currently on the roster. He will be a redshirt sophomore next season. Jack Sears, a four-star recruit out of San Clemente, enrolled early this spring and will be a redshirt freshman in 2018.

Though former quarterback and current receiver Jalen Greene could be called upon to return to his original position next year, the Trojans are in need of a quarterback in the class of 2018 to provide depth, if nothing else.

Even if USC is able to find another top quarterback prospect to add to the class, losing Corral could have major consequences for the Trojans’ recruiting efforts as a whole. The U.S. Army All-American was a vocal recruiter for USC.
