Running Back

Projected Starter: #25 Ronald Jones II, Jr. Back Up: #28 Aca’Cedric Ware, Jr. OR #29 Vavae Malepeai, RS-Fr. Rotation: Stephen Carr, Fr. Reserve: #16 Dominic Davis, Jr.

Injuries to Ronald Jones II and Aca’Cedric Ware this spring have muddled the waters at running back. At the very least, Jones II should remain the man on top of the depth chart. Behind him, the picture gets interesting.

Ware has run well throughout his USC career, but injuries have limited him in-season and continued to be a problem this spring. Hampered by an ankle problem, he only just returned to pads for the final week of practice.

Redshirt freshman Vavae Malepeai has benefited from the absence of those more veteran players, thriving as an all-around running back who the coaches appear to trust as a rusher, receiver and blocker.

That makes him a real threat to Ware’s penciled in standing as the first back in after Jones II.

Dominic Davis also missed time this spring because of a concussion. He came back and ran well but it still looks like he’s on the outside looking in when it comes to significant playing time.
