Four-star wide receiver Manuel Allen announced his decommitment from the 2018 USC football recruiting class on Friday.
Less than two months since he committed to USC football’s 2018 recruiting class, Corona Centennial wide receiver Manuel Allen backed off that pledge.
On Friday afternoon, Allen took to Twitter to announce that he has re-opened his recruitment.
“After a long talk with my family, I’ve decided to decommit from USC and re-open my recruiting process,” Allen wrote on Twitter. “I would like to thank coach [Clay] Helton and his staff for giving me the opportunity to be a Trojan.”
Allen is a four-star prospect and the No. 13 player in the state of California for the class of 2018, per the 247Sports composite rankings. At 6-foot-2, 170 pounds, he rates 18th among wide receivers in the class and 101st in national rankings.
USC welcomed Allen’s commitment back in early January but there shouldn’t be a great deal of concern regarding his decommitment, for now at least.
There are a number of receiving targets on the Trojans’ board for 2018, including Jalen Hall out of Hawkins High School, just down the street from USC. Hall is the top receiver in the class and the top player in California.

The Trojans are also hot on the tail of Mater Dei receiver Amon-Ra St. Brown, among other highly-rated pass catchers.
Though there are other options beyond Allen, USC will need to close on a couple of receivers in this class considering the graduation of Steven Mitchell and the upcoming NFL eligibility for Deontay Burnett and Jalen Greene after the 2017 season.
USC’s 2018 class is looking strong even without Allen in the fold. Five-star linebacker Palaie Gaoteote recently committed to the Trojans, joining five-star quarterback Matt Corral and four-star prospects like linebackers Raymond Scott and Bo Calvert on top of cornerback Marcus Johnson.
