23. Rose Bowl Expectations
USC owns the Rose Bowl.
The Trojans have played in the Granddaddy of the Them All a record 33 times with a record 24 wins. That’s triple the number of wins of Michigan, who are second all-time in both categories with an 8-12 record.
The Trojans’ history at the Rose Bowl includes game-winning touchdowns by J.K. McKay and Charles White, national championships won by John Robinson and Pete Carroll, and huge performances by individual players like Keyshawn Johnson and John David Booty.
Playing on January 1 in Pasadena is a tradition with a double-edged sword for the Trojans, however. The program has forever functioned on the basis that winning the Rose Bowl is the ultimate goal.
It’s given the Trojan Marching Band chants and media the power of Rose Bowl expectations. USC is predicted to get to Pasadena –or the yearly equivalent– nearly annually, which can be a burden for Troy.
Case in point: the 2012 season.
