Another month and another Tate Martell list to digest. This one is a top five from the five-star Bishop Gorman quarterback of the 2017 class, with Steve Sarkisian’s USC Trojans making the cut.
Also listed among on the schools Martell announced on Twitter is Alabama, Texas A&M, Michigan and Washington.
It’s an interesting list for a few reasons. First, Martell de-committed from Washington earlier this year and now listed UW second, despite saying there isn’t an order. Secondly, the glaring omission is Oregon, whom Washington has appeared to take the place of.
Both Martell and his teammate/brother Tyjon Lindsey visited Eugene last month, with rave reviews to give the Ducks momentum to be in the running all the way until the end. That now looks to not be the case, barring another list at some point.
And lastly, Michigan making the cut is an interesting one. For the last few months, the Martell buzz has surrounded the foursome of USC, Texas A&M, Alabama and Oregon. For Jim Harbaugh to claw in there despite running an entirely different offense is impressive. Though again, another list could pop the Wolverines out of it, especially with a commitment looming.
All in all, USC has to be feeling good about their chances here, especially with Oregon seemingly out of the picture. But there’s a long way to go and A&M has been in hot pursuit since offering him a couple of months ago.
Look for the Trojans to make Martell’s finalists at some point this summer, with a decision shortly after that.
