Before Saturday’s beat down in the desert, Pendergast’s changes to the USC defense were putting him in the conversation for Kiffin’s possible replacement. After giving up 62 points, that might be more of a long-shot.

Why he’d work: He’s already in place, well-liked by the players and would be more likely to keep the current staff around.

Why he wouldn’t work: He has no head coaching experience and the defensive breakdowns against Arizona State suggest he might not be the answer to USC’s defensive problems.
