Sunday was Junior Day at USC, with several top recruits from the Class of 2014 touring the Trojans’ facilities and getting to meet Lane Kiffin’s staff. The Trojans made the best of the day, both offering a scholarship to three-star Tashon Smallwood, as well as receiving his verbal commitment, per Greg Biggins of Scout.

Smallwood is a 6-foot-1, 285 pound defensive tackle out of Central East High School in Fresno, and has been recruited by newly-named offensive coordinator Clay Helton, who recruits the Northern California region.

USC currently has a host of interior defensive linemen, including Leonard Williams, Antwaun Woods, George Uko and Kenny Bigelow. With the Trojans’ switch to a multiple-D set under Clancy Pendergast, it’s yet to be seen exactly how Ed Orgeron’s defensive line rotation will be affected.

Pendergast’s system appears to be rooted in a base 3-4, with a hybrid defensive end. Though both he and Orgeron have mentioned the value of a 5-2 defense against the spread to provide a more lateral defensive in the effort to contain the edge.

Smallwood is USC’s fourth commitment in the Class of 2014, a class that has a maximum size of 20, due to carryover early enrollee slots.
