The USC Trojans have had the past week off because of spring break, and will resume their spring camp sessions on Tues., March 26. The most notable aspect of camp thus far has been the number of athletes that have gone down due to injury, and what that could suggest for the others competing at these positions.

Before it’s time to get back into the practice flow, let’s take a look at some of these injuries and where the Trojans are in terms of recovery:

Max Wittek (knee)

One of the first, and obviously most significant injuries through the first two weeks of spring camp came when Max Wittek missed the first scrimmage because of a “slight” knee injury. It turned out that he sprained his MCL, and sat out the following week as well. In his absence, Cody Kessler and Max Browne have been going head to head in practice, splitting extended reps and having the opportunity to showcase their strengths. For them, Wittek’s injury was an advantage, an opportunity to boost their stock. Wittek could return to practice on Tuesday, but if he continues to be held out and miss more time, it could have serious implications for how this position battle shakes out.

Silas Redd (knee)

The next most significant injury caused the Trojans to lose Silas Redd for the rest of spring, as he recently had surgery to repair a slightly torn meniscus. Redd is USC’s most experienced running back, and it is highly likely that he will keep the starting job once he returns in the fall. But a quartet of backs behind him–Tre Madden, D.J. Morgan, Buck Allen and Justin Davis–are vying for playing time as well. With Redd out, the stage has been set for the remaining weeks of camp to have a very compelling contest at this position as well.

Marqise Lee (knee)

On the same day Wittek got hurt, WR Marqise Lee also dinged his knee. He sat out the last week of practice, but is expected to return after spring break. While there is no doubt Lee will have the starting job come the fall, the time without him has given younger guys like Nelson Agholor, George Farmer and newbie Steven Mitchell an elevated platform of their own.

Dion Bailey (shoulder)

On the defensive side of the ball, the biggest injury blow was dealt to exterior linebacker Dion Bailey, who had shoulder surgery and will miss all of spring camp. When he returns, it is quite possible that Bailey will go back to his natural position of safety, which would be more conducive to his skill set in the new scheme. While he heals, Su’a Cravens, Josh Shaw, Demetrius Wright and occasionally Leon McQuay III will campaign for starting jobs. Like the quarterback spot, this position likely will be in limbo until the fall.

Gerald Bowman (leg)

Bowman has not participated in spring camp and is slated to miss the entirety of it, as he had compartmental surgery because of a torn muscle in his leg. If he is good to go by August, he will be another major player in the safety rotation.

Interior linemen J.R. Tavai, Cody Temple and Greg Townsend Jr., as well as cornerback Kevon Seymour have all missed practices here and there with minor injuries, but all are expected to be back in the regular rotation throughout the rest of camp.

Come Tuesday, the Trojans will be tasked with finding temporary but suitable replacements for some of these injury-laden athletes, as well as continuing to hammer out the make-up of this squad for 2013.

Lane Kiffin told the media after Saturday’s scrimmage that RB Silas Redd suffered a torn meniscus when he went down during Thursday’s practice, and will have surgery next Tuesday. He will miss the remainder of spring camp, but should be ready to go come the fall.

With him out of practice, the happenings in the running back corps just got that much more interesting.

Javorious “Buck” Allen, D.J. Morgan, and newcomer Justin Davis are actively vying for the No. 2 running back spot, with Tre Madden also attending practice in a limited capacity while he continues to fully heal from the ACL injury that sidelined him last year. With Redd now out due to injury, this trio will find themselves splitting opportunities when the team returns from spring break. Any of them can use this time to get an advantage over the others, and to show Kiffin why he should be the compliment to Redd.

Davis has been impressing early in camp, with an aggressive, relentless style of play. He quite possibly has the best hands on the team of the offensive skill position players, and that kind of ball control is something that Coach Kiffin is certainly going to notice. He made the most of the limited amount of carries he got before spring break, and now with Redd out, his work ethic could see an increase in responsibility and opportunity for the rest of camp.

Morgan has also been impressive as of late, which goes a long way for him, as he has spent much of his career with Troy in Kiffin’s dog house. Fumble-itis plagued him repeatedly in his token appearances during the 2011 season, which saw him benched for the majority of it. He cleaned up his game in 2012, and even had some standout performances against Colorado, Utah, and Arizona, where he showed his ability to make tacklers miss as well as his improved hands. Now is a good time for him to show the coaches that he is ready to take the No. 2 spot not just for his maturity and knowledge of the system–an advantage he has over the younger tailbacks–but also for his increasing aptitude for keeping the ball in his hands.

Allen is probably having the quietest spring camp of the active running backs, but not for lack of productivity. Kiffin noted last week that he had a couple strong practices, most specifically the one last Thursday. When practice went live, Allen capped his performance in the scrimmage with a 4-yard touchdown run and followed that with with a 20-yard dash to the house on the final play day.

Not only do the Trojans have these three guys already in the mix, but they can expect to have Madden back by the fall, as well as to welcome newcomer Ty Isaac. When Redd returns, USC should have a strong idea not only of what their go-to ground game is going to look like, but also of who they will want to look to as reliable alternates.

The Trojans find themselves with a bevy of talent in the running backs corps, and with the building blocks to reestablish a resemblance of Tailback U.

The Trojans held their second scrimmage of Spring Camp on Saturday, as well as the last practice before the team has a week off for Spring Break. It was a spirited scrimmage for the Trojans, though a number of athletes sat out with injury.

Here are the quick hits from Saturday’s scrimmage:

Cody Kessler went 13-19 for 161 yards, including a 74-yd TD to WR Nelson Agholor, while Max Browne went 6-9 for 69 yards.

Buck Allen had 11 carries for 65 yds, and scored a touchdown.

Head coach Lane Kiffin estimated that 10 Trojans missed drills and/or the scrimmage today because of injury.

TE Xavier Grimble suffered a broken rib, and it is not clear whether he will be able to participate in the rest of spring practice.

RB Silas Redd, who suffered knee injury Thursday, will have surgery Tuesday, Kiffin said. He has a torn meniscus, but should be ready for fall. Max Wittek and Su’a Cravens did not practice either.

Kiffin hinted that Marcus Martin, not Max Tuerk, might get the bulk of reps at center going forward.

WR Darreus Rogers shined in the scrimmage, and has been one of the stars of spring camp through the first two weeks. He’s consistant, and could really make a push to get himself near the top of the wide receiver rotation come the fall.

After Spring Break, the Trojans will hold their practice on Tues., March 26 at 4 p.m., and it will be open to the public.
