For all the struggles and troubles he endured while a USC Trojan, basketball player Leonard Washington had bounced back and was making the most of his second chance at Wyoming. With the Trojans, he was most known for punching then-Oklahoma Sooners star Blake Griffin in the groin. At Wyoming, however, Washington led the team in scoring as a junior, averaging nearly 13 points and 7 rebounds a game. At his best, he showcased that same fierce, intense competitive nature that we saw at USC, but channeled into his play on the court.

And at his worst, that fiery energy would bring him another scandal that could jeopardize, or even end, his basketball career.

It started on April 4th when Wyoming Cowboys basketball coach Larry Shyatt suspended Washington indefinitely for unspecified team rules violations. Things only got worse for Washington when today he was sentenced for battery and criminal entry stemming from an April 15th incident where he is accused of punching a guest at a party.

Washington is not the first athlete to punch out someone, but doing so within two weeks of being suspended indefinitely does not bode well for him.

Coach Shyatt is aware of the incident and is “monitoring it closely”, but he is in a bit of a sticky wicket himself; three of Wyoming’s top five scorers will not return as a result of graduation, so the Cowboys really need Washington to be able to stay afloat next season.

Shyatt has yet to indicate what he is going to do about the matter, so for now Leonard Washington and his career will hang in the balance.

Two weeks after Junior Seau was found dead by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest, his famed restaurant in San Diego has shut its doors. According to Fox 5in San Diego, it was decided that his ‘charisma’ couldn’t be replicated, subsequently killing the viability of the establishment.

Trustee Bette Hoffman, who formerly was the director of the Junior Seau Foundation and former vice president of Seau’s of San Diego LLC, announced the closure of the popular sports bar.

“Without Seau’s charismatic leadership, it was felt that the future profitability of the restaurant could be in question,” Hoffman released in a statement.

Not only is it a ridiculous reason to shut down the restaurant, at least from an outsider perspective, but it’s a disgraceful move in the name of Seau. While the Chargers and Trojans will honor Seau at length this season, letting his restaurant close its doors is the worst way to honor the future Hall of Famer.

Financially, one would think that the Seau restaurant would actually see a spike in revenue after news of Seau’s death, at least initially. Given the popularity of Seau and his godlike stature in San Diego, there had to be a way to keep the place alive by capitalizing on finding management or executives within his trust to spearhead the restaurant’s survival in Seau’s honor.

Not having Seau around is surely a crushing blow, but letting it die in the same way that Junior did, is just a sad missed opportunity to remember the player that many in Southern California are still reeling over.
