USC Football Fall Showcase: Play-by-play from the Coliseum

USC football completed their Fall Showcase on Saturday afternoon, running a full-pads, live-tackling scrimmage in front of a crowd at the Coliseum.

USC football’s Fall Camp is now officially complete after Saturdady’s Fall Showcase scrimmage at the Coliseum.

The Trojans went at it for about 90 minutes, with quarterbacks JT Daniels, Matt Fink, Jack Sears and Kedon Slovis taking turns guiding their offenses.

Here’s how it all went down:

Drive 1

• JT Daniels led the first team on a scoreless opening drive, completing some nice passes downfield but ultimately stalling around the 20.
• Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Completion to Tyler Vaughns.
  • 2-1: Completion to Vaughns on the outside.
  • 1-10: Stephen Carr carries up the middle.
  • 2-8: Incompletion to Vaughns after pressure from Christian Rector had the quarterback overthrowing his target.
  • 3-8: Completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown despite pressure from Rector.
  • 1-10: Carr carries to the left. John Houston makes the tackle.
  • 2-8: Carr stuffed by Palaie Gaoteote and Isaiah Pola-Mao.
  • 3-8: Incompletion nearly intercepted by Christian Rector.
  • 4-8: Missed field goal by Chase McGrath from 37-yards out.

Drive 2

• Kedon Slovis led the second team
• Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Quincy Jountti carries for a short gain.
  • 2-8: Completion to Devon Williams, skimming past Dominic Davis for a long gain after catch.
  • 1-10: Incompletion on the right.
  • 2-10:
  • 9 to 2 dropped (28 pressure)

Drive 3

• Matt Fink worked with the first team and converted two third downs to score a long touchdown.
• Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown on the left for a short gain. Chris Steele missed a tackle.
  • 2-8: Completion to Markese Stepp on the right for a short gain. Greg Johnson with the tackle.
  • 3-6: Completion to Michael Pittman on the left. The pass was high and the receiver did well to leap for the catch and the first down. Isaiah Pola-Mao had the tackle.
  • 1-10: Incompletion too high on the right to Tyler Vaughns.
  • 2-10: Drop by Velus Jones on a curl on the right.
  • 3-10: TOUCHDOWN to Amon-Ra St. Brown who got open in the middle of the field. The quarterback delivered the ball for an easy 50-yard touchdown.

Drive 4

• Jack Sears led a scoring drive with the second team. A penalty helping keep the offense moving early on before the quarterback hit a big play and the offense rolled from there.
• Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Completion to Devon Williams on the left with some yards after catch, but the play was negated by a flag pushing the offense back.
  • 1-15: Completion to Williams on the left on a curl. Dominic Davis made the tackle.
  • 2-10: Completion to Kenan Christon stuffed well by Caleb Tremblay on the outside.
  • 3-10: Pressure from Dejon Benton forced the quarterback to scramble away, with a penalty thrown as he ran on the left for defensive holding.
  • 1-10: Completion downfield to Velus Jones despite pressure in the face of the quarterback. It was a risky throw that was short over the middle of the field, but the receiver did well to come back for it and beat Jayden Williams for the long gain.
  • 1-10: Kenan Christon carried through a big hole on the inside, with Josh Falo blocking ahead of him.
  • 2-3: Incompletion to Christon, overthrown at the front right corner of the endzone.
  • 3-3: Completion to John Jackson III on a slant, converting the first down before being tackled by Kanai’i Mauga.
  • 1-GL: TOUCHDOWN to Devon Williams on a quick slant. The receiver got in front of Jayden Williams.

Drive 5

• JT Daniels led a touchdown drive with the first team, making a string of impressive completions before getting a little bit lucky on his scoring throw.
• Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Stephen Carr carried up the middle before being taken down by Chase Williams.
  • 2-5: Completion to Michael Pittman on the left. Chris Steele tackled him out of bounds but the first down was secured.
  • 1-10: Completion to Velus Jones on the left on a post.
  • 1-10: Completion to Amon-Ra St. Brown over the middle after the quarterback stepped up in the pocket to avoid pressure.
  • 1-10: Drop by Michael Pittman, who was open on a post.
  • 2-10: Carr carried for a short gain but a penalty was called on the play and the offense moved back.
  • 2-20: Completion to Michael Pittman on the right for a quick gain, stopped by Chris Steele.
  • 3-15: TOUCHDOWN to Erik Krommenhoek up the seam. The pass was slightly underthrown as the quarterback was rushed by pressure from Abdul-Malik McClain but Greg Johnson let the ball through to the tight end.

Drive 6 (Two-minute drill)

• Kedon Slovis led the second team on a fruitless two-minute drive thanks to a missed field goal.
• Play-by-play
  • (1:29) 1-10: Sack by Raymond Scott, coming quickly through the middle of the line.
  • (1:22) 2-10: Completion to Josh Falo on the left after Dejon Benton came through the interior with pressure. Maninoa Tufono made the tackle.
  • (0:53) 1-10: Completion to Kenan Christon on the left.
  • (0:36) 2-5: Run by Slovis after pressure from Juliano Falaniko to convert the first.
  • (0:29) 1-10: Incompletion to Devon Williams downfield. Pass interference called on Jayden Williams.
  • (0:23) 1-10: False start on Frank Martin, the left tackle.
  • (0:23) 1-15: Incompletion to Drake London in the middle of the field. The quarterback was pressured on the play.
  • (0:15) 2-15: Completion to Velus Jones on the outside, but short of the sideline.

  • (0:01) 4-6: 47-yard field goal by Michael Brown hit the right upright.

Drive 7 (Two-minute drill)

• Matt Fink led the first team on a successful two-minute drive, with two big plays getting it done.

  • (1:29) 1-10: Incompletion to Michael Pittman on the outside, A missed throw.
  • (1:25) 2-10: Incompletion to Pittman on the right sideline. Jay Tufele pressured the quarterback and may have tipped the ball, which wobbled on the way to the receiver.
  • (1:18) 3-10: Completion to Pittman open on a post to convert the downs. Olaijah Griffin left him open but made the tackle.
  • (0:59) 1-10: Completion long on the right to Tyler Vaughns. The pass was slightly underthrown but the receiver adjusted well to make a tough catch over Isaac Taylor-Stuart.

• Sears had his drive go nowhere with a mixed first and second team.

  • 2-12: Sears ran away form pressure and gained nice yardage
  • 3-3: Completion to Erik Krommenhoek on a hook to convert the first. C.J. Pollard made the tackle.
  • 1-10: False start
  • 1-15: Incomplete to Tyler Vaughns after Sears rolled from the pressure of Christian Rector. Olaijah Griffin had tight coverage.
  • 2-15: Stephen Carr stuffed by Brandon Pili for a loss.
  • 3-17: Incompletion to Carr over the middle. The quarterback was evading pressure and put the pass too high and well out of reach of the back.
  • 4-17: Punt.

Drive 9

• JT Daniels led a long scoring drive with a mixed second and third team.
•  Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Completon to Devon Williams on the left. Dominic Davis had the coverage.
  • 2-2: Kenan Christon ran up the middle for a first down.
  • 1-10: Completion to Christon, but he was swallowed immediately by Abdul-Malik McClain for a loss.
  • 2-13: Incompletion to John Jackson III on the right. The pass was too high and the receiver had it drop off his finger tips.
  • 3-13: Completion to Devon Williams on a post, beating Dominic Davis for the conversion.
  • 1-10: Christon was met immediately by Connor Murphy at the line.
  • 2-10: Completion to Christon on a dump off to the left.
  • 3-4: Completion to John Jackson III. He had to go low for it after it was tipped.
  • 1-10: Incompletion to Devon Williams downfield on the left, but pass interference called to move the chains.
  • 1-10: Completion to Jackson III on the right sideline.
  • 2-7: Completion to Jude Wolfe on the left. Jordan McMillan made the quick stop.
  • 3-5: TOUCHDOWN to Devon Williams. The quarterback found the receiver open on a slant. Jayden Williams missed a tackle as he ran into the endzone.

Drive 10

• Kedon Slovis led a touchdown drive with the first team thanks to a couple of big throws to Michael Pittman going against a second team defense.
• Play-by-play
  • 1-10: Incompletion tipped by Drake Jackson.
  • 2-10: Markese Stepp carried for a short gain up the middle.
  • 3-8: Completion downfield to Michael Pittman, making a tough catch on a jump ball over Chris Steele on the left.
  • 1-10: Completion to Michael Pittman on a deep comeback after a low snap from Brett Neilon.
  • 1-G6: Stepp carried up the middle for a short gain.
  • 1-G2: Fumble by Stepp recovered by C.J. Pollard, but a penalty against the defense was called on the play.
  • 1-G2: Stepp carried but was dropped in the backfield by Kana’i Mauga.
  • 1-G2: TOUCHDOWN carried in by Stepp, who had Ralen Goforth on his back across the goal line.

Drive 11

• Matt Fink’s drive with the third team went nowhere fast, thanks to a big play from Caleb Tremblay to start with.

  • 1-10: Chris Edmonson stuffed by Caleb Tremblay for a loss.
  • 2-13: Completion outside to Chase Locke on the right.
  • 3-8: Completion to John Jackson III on a slant, just short of the first down.
  • 4-1: Punt.

Drive 12 (Two-minute drill)

• Jack Sears led a successful scoring drive with the first team. His inaccuracy throwing on the run was a problem to start out with, but he completed two big plays to get the win.

  • (1:29) 1-10: Incompletion after pressure from Christian Rector forced the quarterback outside the pocket. The pass was well out of bounds.
  • (1:22) 2-10: Completion to Tyler Vaughns on the right with an impressive toe tap.
  • (1:18) 1-10: Incompletion downfield on the right, but well out of bounds. Pass interference against Isaac Taylor-Stuart called.
  • (1:12) 1-10: TOUCHDOWN to Amon-Ra St. Brown over the middle. The ball dropped in between the two safeties, but the receiver had to stretch for it and made a nice play to secure it.

Drive 13 (Two-minute drill)

• JT Daniels led an unsuccessful two-minute drive to end the day.
