Notre Dame’s Shamrock Series uniforms are a lesson in what not to do with alternates. Plus our daily USC football link round up.

Can’t get enough USC football and basketball news? We’ve got your morning dose of all the best content from around the web concerning the men of Troy.

1st & 10:

First Word… Notre Dame has done it again. They’ve proven USC traditionalists right. Specifically, they’ve proven that alternate uniforms should be feared.

The Irish unveiled their alternates for the Shamrock Series game against Army and they’re…..well, just look.

USC fans are notoriously protective of the traditional, iconic look of the Trojans’ uniforms. But the above is precisely why.

Experimentation can result in a putrid shade of gold pants matched with a bland shade of green jerseys accented by oddly beige shoulders and shiny gold shoes.

The hand-painted illustration of the motif about the Basilica doorway is a cool idea, clearly borrowing from Navy’s beautifully painted helmets from year. Unfortunately, it’s another element that just seems to clash with all the other elements that Under Armour tried to pull off.

But don’t let what Notre Dame does wrong dissuade you from being open to the idea of an alternate USC jersey.

The Trojans fierce commitment to tradition shows in the way Nike unwrapped USC’s updated jerseys this year: ““Respect the past, represent the future.”

USC and Nike know that the Trojan Family doesn’t want anything like Notre Dame has gotten from Under Armour. An alternate, if or when it comes down the line, should and likely will reflect that.
