USC Football News: Freshmen Get Jersey Numbers

The fall 2015 USC football roster is out, revealing new numbers for the crop of incoming Trojan freshman, a class that includes Iman Marshall and Rasheem Green.

At quarterback, Sam Darnold will suit up in the No. 14 jersey though that number is also claimed by walk on quarterback Conner Sullivan.

Running back Ronald Jones II, Dominic Davis –who is also listed as a receiver– and Aca’Cedric Ware will add No. 25, No. 16, and No. 28 to the unit, respectively. It’s worth noting that Ware’s new number was famously worn by “Notre Dame killer” Anthony Davis, who finished as the runner-up in the 1974 Heisman Trophy voting.

Receiver De’Quan Hampton is set to wear No. 89, while cornerback-receiver Isaiah Langley will wear No. 17, a number left vacant after the transfer of Devian Shelton this offseason.

Fellow dual-threat athlete Ykili Ross, who is listed as a safety-cornerback-receiver, will don No. 30.

Tight end Tyler Petite will take over Randall Telfer’s No. 82 jersey, while center Cole Smith takes Marcus Martin’s old No. 66.

Defensive star Iman Marshall wore No. 8 in high school and that number will carry over for him at USC.

Joining him in the secondary is Marvell Tell with the No. 7 at safety. The last safety to wear No. 7? All-American T.J. McDonald in 2012.

USC’s long history of producing top linebacker talent should continue with the new slate of players at that position donning familiar and recognizable numbers.

John Houston carries on the recent tradition at No. 10 in place of Hayes Pullard. Osa Masina will follow in Rey Maualuga’s footsteps in the No. 58, while Porter Gustin will wear Oscar Lua’s old No. 45.

In the trenches, USC welcomes a host of new players and numbers. Defensive lineman Rasheem Green is set to take on the responsibility of Leonard Williams’ No. 94.

Jacob Daniel, Noah Jefferson and Christian Rector picked up No. 92, No. 91 and No. 89. Kevin Scott is now No. 53.

The numbers for early enrollees quarterback Ricky Town, who will wear No. 8, wide receiver Isaac Whitney, who claims Nelson Agholor’s old No. 15, linebacker Cameron Smith, who will don No. 35, offensive lineman Roy Hemsley, who will wear No. 66, and offensive lineman Chuma Edoga, who took No. 70, were revealed before spring camp began.
