Serra QB Caleb Wilson Commits to USC as Preferred Walk-On TE

Serra quarterback Caleb Wilson committed to play tight end for the USC Trojans Monday, according to Ryan Bartow of 247Sports.

Wilson whose father is defensive line coach Chris Wilson, will join the Trojans as a preferred walk-on and will not count against USC’s scholarship numbers, which are limited to 25 initial counters for the first time since scholarship reductions began in 2012.

The Serra-product had scholarship offers from Central Arkansas and Old Dominion. In choosing the Trojans, he flipped from Old Dominion, which he had been committed to since Jan. 5.

Though he played quarterback for Serra, he projects as a tight end in college with plenty of size at 6-5, 212 lbs.

USC is in desperate need of every body they can get at tight end, with just two scholarship players at that position currently on the roster after the graduation of long-time starter Randall Telfer.

More from Reign of Troy

Bryce Dixon will return for his sophomore season, while Jalen Cope-Fitzpatrick is expected to return from academic ineligibility in 2014.

Campolindo tight end, Tyler Petite, a four-star recruit, is set to sign for the Trojans on Signing Day, increasing the total of scholarship tight ends to three.

Landing Wilson is a win-win for USC. As a coaches’ son, Wilson can afford to join without the security of a scholarship. Though employee benefits for free tuition do not kick in until two years of service, next year Wilson could make use of his father’s benefit without ever receiving a scholarship.

At the same time, the Trojans get a scholarship-worthy player without having to use a highly-coveted spot on a position which has already been recruited successfully this year.

Wilson’s arrival also strengthens the already tight partnership between USC and Serra. The Trojans already boast such players as Adoree’ Jackson, Jalen Greene, and Olajuwon Tucker from that pipeline and will look to add Serra recruits Rasheem Green and John Houston on Signing Day.
