USC vs. Arizona Report Card: Grading the Trojan Offense

facebooktwitterreddit

The USC Trojans rode the electric performance of Buck Allen on offense on the way to a 28-26 victory over No. 10 Arizona in Tuscon.

Offensively it was not a perfect outing, but the Trojans did enough to get the road win and take their place atop the Pac-12 south division standings.

Here’s our report card for the USC offense in week seven.

B-.

Cody Kessler threw his first interception of the season against Arizona and failed to hit 200 yards for just the second time this year.

Beyond that, it was a decent performance for the redshirt junior. He hit Nelson Agholor for a touchdown pass and produced nine first downs through the air.

Even the interception was impressive in the lead up as Kessler avoided multiple pass rushers to nearly convert on third-and-19 but for a lack of zip on the ball.

Still, Kessler also struggled to hit the deep ball when the Trojans tried to open up the field and that limited the USC offense when the running game wasn’t hitting home runs.

. Standout. Standout: Cody Kessler. QUARTERBACK

A.

Buck Allen hit his fair share of home runs for the Trojans Saturday. En route to 208 yards on 26 carries, Allen scored on rushes of 34 and 48 yards but those scores were only part of his overall standout performance. Take out those runs and he still averaged 5.25 yards on the night.

Showing the ability which earned him USC’s team MVP award last year, Allen took the offense (and more than a few defenders) on his back and supplied the spark the Trojans needed.

Unfortunately for the Trojan running backs as a unit, Justin Davis’ fumble set up Arizona’s first touchdown of the night. That costly mistake helped the Wildcats stay in the game when it appeared USC might take complete control.
