USC vs. Oregon State Report Card: Grading the Trojan Offense

facebooktwitterreddit

The USC Trojans returned to the Coliseum Saturday and brought back that winning flavor with them, defeating the Oregon State Beavers 35-10.

It was an essential sort of win following up the upset loss to Boston College before the bye week, though it failed to generate the excitement of a complete turn around.

Offensively, it was once again clear to see the talent which populates the Trojan ranks. Unfortunately at times, it was also apparent that USC has yet to hit their stride as we near the midpoint of the season.

A-. At quarterback it was another solid performance from Cody Kessler, who has firmly established himself as one of the more reliable signal callers in the Pac-12.

For the second straight contest, Kessler’s completion percentage was above 75%. He threw for 261 yards and two touchdowns with a passer rating of 167.41. Most notably, he finished his fourth game of the season without throwing an interception and never looked in danger of breaking that streak.

His only real mishap was being sacked three times. An intentional grounding penalty in the second quarter seemed unnecessary.

Ultimately, his poise in the pocket, accurately delivered passes and all around game managing skills elevated Kessler over his Beaver counterpart Sean Mannion.

. Standout. Cody Kessler. QUARTERBACK

Justin Davis. RUNNING BACK. A-. The Trojan running backs needed as much of a bounce-back game as anyone else after Boston College after they were stuffed over and over on the ground.

They delivered against Oregon State, totaling 242 yards on the ground along with two touchdowns.

Justin Davis was the standout despite Buck Allen out rushing him 117 yards to 92. It was Davis who athletically tiptoed his way into the endzone to start off the offensive scoring on a swing pass. And it was Davis who carried USC through the third quarter.

Of course it wasn’t all roses. In the first half the two backs gained just 33 yards combined and Javis was at a negative rushing total.

Still, both tailbacks were involved in the passing game early and their second half performance ground out the victory in the end.
