It’s officially college football season. For real this time, as the preseason AP poll was released this morning. As expected, reigning national champ Florida State sits atop the rankings as an overwhelming No. 1, while USC is ranked 15th just like they are in the Coaches Poll.
It’s not a bad starting point for Sarkisian, given all of the turnover from last season, plus the incoming wave of talent via the 2014 recruiting class. It’s also a semi-familiar ranking, as in 2010, the Trojans were 14th to start the Lane Kiffin era.
Last year, the Trojans were ranked at No. 24 in the preseason, before ultimately going 10-4 and finishing ranked 19th following a big win over Fresno State in the LasVegas Bowl.
As with the coaches, the 2014 Trojans are just behind Stanford at No. 11, but ahead of opponents Notre Dame and ASU at No. 17 and No. 19, respectively. UCLA is the fourth opponent making the list, but the highest ranked at No. 7, the same spot the Bruins began the last time they won the Pac-10 in 1998. Oregon State received 10 votes.
