Antwaun Woods Leaves USC Football Practice in Sling, Out 1 to 2 Weeks

The USC Trojans have been dealt a potentially crucial blow, as starting nose tackle Antwaun Woods left Friday afternoon’s fall practice early, with his left arm in a sling.

UPDATE: According to head coach Steve Sarkisian, Woods is expected to miss up to 10 days with an elbow injury. X-rays were negative.

Friday was the Trojans’ first full practice in full pads, after wearing just shoulder pads on Thursday.

Woods, a redshirt junior out of Taft High School in Canoga Park, has been expected to enter the season as the only nose tackle with much experience, even before losing the highly touted Kenny Bigelow for the season, due to an ACL tear.

In two seasons as a starter, Woods has recorded 35 total tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss and four sacks.

Should Woods’ injury prove significant, the benefactor to his playing time would be redshirt junior Cody Temple, followed by walk-on junior college transfer Joey Augello.

Temple missed the bulk of the 2012 season with an ankle injury, and played sparingly in 2013, getting on the field in seven games despite not recording a statistic.

Augello had three tackles as a third stringer, while playing just three times, all in blowouts.

USC has an off day on Saturday, and will continue Steve Sarkisian’s first fall camp on Sunday with the first day of two-a-days.
