USC Spring Football: Quarterback Battle Resumes

Spring break is over at USC, which means the Trojans are back on the football field beginning on Tuesday afternoon.

Steve Sarkisian got things off to a quick start, both literally and figuratively, which included Josh Shaw’s position apparently being settled.

One issue that has yet to be resolved however, is the battle at quarterback, which appears to be a two-horse race between Max Browne and Cody Kessler.

Sarkisian hasn’t set a date by which he would name a starter, but admitted he hopes to have his guy by the conclusion of spring practice. It is after all the way Pete Carroll handled quarterback battles at USC and suffice to say, the results were satisfactory.

If Sarkisian is to anoint a leader by the end of camp, he will have 12 more practices to oversee, culminating with the spring game on April 19.

While Browne was enrolled at USC in time for spring practice in 2013, Lane Kiffin declared him as a player who would redshirt early on and allowed Kessler and Max Wittek to compete against one another.

With Wittek set to transfer, this is Browne’s first true opportunity at emerging as the starter since arriving on campus.

Stick with Reign of Troy for continued coverage of spring practice at USC.

Sarkisian may have his hands full with the early preparations for the 2014 season, but Reign of Troy has given you, the readers, the opportunity to name the greatest Trojan of the them all. Voting begins with the quarterbacks in the Air region on Tuesday and new matchups will be made available to vote on daily.
