Report: Former USC QB Mark Sanchez To Sign With Philadelphia Eagles

Former USC Trojan and recently released Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez will sign with the Philadelphia Eagles pending a physical, according to ESPN’s Chris Mortensen.

Sanchez was released by the Jets on Friday after an up-and-down five years in the organization. An preseason shoulder injury knocked him out of the quarterback competition with rookie Geno Smith in 2013 and given the investment in the younger quarterback it was considered only a matter of time before Sanchez and New York parted ways.

Meanwhile in Philadelphia, Eagles head coach Chip Kelly is amassing an army of former Pac-12 quarterbacks. Sanchez, if he passes the physical and signs, would join Arizona’s Nick Foles and fellow Trojan Matt Barkley on the roster. While he clearly has the most experience among the quarterbacks, he will likely only battle for the back up position.

Still, there are rumblings from elsewhere in the league about interest in Sanchez. Rams head coach Jeff Fisher, also a Trojan, told media at the owners meetings over the weekend that his team might be interested as well.

“I’d say that there is interest,” Fisher told USAToday.com at the league’s owners meetings. “I can’t say how much. But there certainly would be interest. I don’t have a backup with experience on the roster right now.”

Unfortunately for Sanchez, opportunities are limited at this point in the NFL offseason. Most teams have already sorted out their quarterback plans and those who haven’t are more interested in back ups, like the Eagles and Rams, than potential starters.
