With the heavy rain that hit Los Angeles, the USC Trojans and No. 13 Cal Poly Pomona Mustangs had their two-game weekend series rescheduled for a doubleheader on Sunday. The Trojans dropped the first game, 5-2, but then were able to score 16 runs on 16 hits in a blowout 16-0 win to get the series split.
Monday meant an exhibition game for the Trojans against Waseda University and the regular season schedule resumes on Tuesday against UC Irvine.
The Anteaters are 8-3 on the season, 5-3 at home and are riding a six-game winning streak. Tuesday’s matchup is just the second road game for the Trojans, who dropped their first one, 2-1, to Cal State Long Beach on Feb. 25. The loss also snapped the Trojans’ seven-game winning streak.
Trojans third baseman Kevin Swick was named Pac-12 Player of the Week for Feb. 24 — March 2. The third baseman finished the week 7-for-12 in three games.
Swick and his teammates will face a formidable Anteaters pitching staff that has a collective ERA of 1.36, with Fresno State being the only opponent to score more than three runs on them this season
Brent Wheatley will make his first start for the Trojans. Wheatley is 1-0 this season, with his lone victory coming in the Trojans’ Feb. 23 win over North Dakota State ; he has six strikeouts in 8 2/3 innings pitched.
The last meeting between the two teams was in May 2013 and was also at Anteaters Ballpark. The Trojans used nine hits to get the 6-4 win.
