All-Time Series: UCLA leads 134-104
Last meeting: UCLA 107, USC 73 on Jan. 5
Following a two-game road trip to the state of Oregon, the USC Trojans are back at the Galen Center to face their crosstown rival, UCLA Bruins.
The last meeting between the two teams resulted in a 34-point drubbing at the hands of the Bruins in the first game of 2014. The 107 points the Bruins scored tied a series-record.
In July of 2013, Trojans’ coach Andy Enfield made some critical remarks about Bruins’ coach Steve Alford. Enfield and the Trojans began the season 4-1, which was the team’s best start since the 6-1 record to open the 2007 season.
Fast forward to present time and the Trojans are a disappointing 10-12, including a record 1-8 in the Pac-12, good for last in the conference. The Bruins meanwhile sit in second place with a 6-3 record in Pac-12 play.
Jordan Adams continues to lead the Bruins with 16.8 points per game and Zach LaVine leads the charge off the bench, averaging 11.2 points per game. Adams and LaVine combined for an efficient 37 points in the first meeting between the teams this season.
For much of the season, the Trojans have been plagued by turnovers and poor free throw shooting. Against the Bruins on Jan. 5, the Trojans had 17 turnovers and shot 53.3% from the free throw line.
Leading scorer Byron Wesley is averaging 16.9 points per game, but the Trojans’ recipe for success has been simple — get Nikola Jovanovic in double figures. When Jovanovic scores 10 or more points, the Trojans are 8-1. The true freshman has failed to reach double figures in eight of the last nine games.
