Steve Sarkisian spoke with several members of the media on Tuesday to address spring practice, recruiting and the direction of the offense.
Spring practice will begin on Tuesday, March 11, and the spring game will be held at the Coliseum at 1 p.m. on April 19.
As in the past, some spring practices will be open to the public.
For the practices held on Howard Jones Field, attendees will again be able to watch from the baseball field deck.
Sarkisian stated all scholarship offers handed out by the previous regime(s) will be honored, but he has cautioned some recruits that they may not fit well in the new system.
As for the sudden departure of Bo Davis, Sarkisian called the situation “a little bit of a hiccup.”
USC formally announced the class of 2014 early enrollees on Monday, but absent from the list was junior college defensive tackle Claude Pelon.
Sarkisian informed the media that Pelon needs to complete a final class before he can become a Trojan.
The head coach is hopeful Pelon will arrive in the near future and in time for spring practice.
Though plenty can take place between now and the start of the 2014 season, Sarkisian said, “The reasonable expectation is that we’re going to compete for a Pac-12 Championship.”
Much has been discussed about what to make of Sarkisian’s offense. It might look like a spread offense, but does it operate as a spread?
Sarkisian again reiterated his goal for the Trojans to be a physical team that is built on running the ball.
According to Sarkisian, the offensive scheme hasn’t changed since his time as an offensive coordinator with the Trojans, rather how the offense is executed has — the uptempo attack gives the skill players an opportunity to make plays.
With multiple juniors making their intentions known regarding the 2014 NFL Draft, mum has been the word for offensive lineman Aundrey Walker.
Sarkisian remarked that Walker needs to get healthy, potentially lending to the notion that Walker will remain with the Trojans in 2014.
The deadline for underclassmen to declare for the draft is Jan. 15.
