USC vs. Fresno State: Trojans lead Bulldogs 14-6 after first quarter

No. 25 USC got the ball first and immediately went to work, moving the ball well through the air to take an early 7-0 lead.

Trojan quarterback Cody Kessler went five of six for 59 yards on the 12-play, 65-yard scoring drive.

On their first drive, the Trojans converted on fourth down and attempted to run a 2-point conversion play, but were called for a false start.

They continued with the aggression and recovered an onside kick, but it was overturned due to “kick catch interference.”  Fresno State got the ball at the Trojans’ 33-yard line and quickly went to work.

Bulldogs quarterback Derek Carr found Davante Adams down the sideline on a fade route, and two plays later he connected with Isaiah Burse for an 8-yard touchdown.

The Trojans managed to salvage their aggressive gamble by blocking the extra-point attempt and lead 7-6.

Kessler continued with his sharp play, finding Xavier Grimble for a 17-yard pass up the seem and he capped the drive off with a 40-yard touchdown pass to Nelson Agholor, giving the Trojans a 14-6 lead.

After the flurry of offense, each team’s defense settled in and there was a stretch of four consecutive drives ending in punts.
