Lane Kiffin to Decide USC's Starting Quarterback After Team Arrives in Hawaii

Just hours after USC sports information director Tim Tessalone released Lane Kiffin’s indecisive depth chart to the media, the fourth-year head coach of the Trojans met with the media after Saturday afternoon’s practice to both downplay it and give a date for determining his starting quarterback.

Like they did in 2010, the Trojans are set to depart on Tuesday afternoon, and according to Kiffin, he will not decide on a starter between Cody Kessler and Max Wittek until the plane lands in Honolulu.

Moreover, Kiffin maintained that both quarterbacks will play in Thursday night’s game against the Rainbow Warriors, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that there’s going to be actual co-starters.

As for the billing on the depth chart, Kiffin was blunt with his decisions.

“That depth chart doesn’t mean anything”, Kiffin told reporters. “I do it because Tim [Tessalone] makes me do it.”

The quarterback position wasn’t the only contested position in USC’s week 1 depth chart, as position battles at running back, cornerback, safety and right guard remain undecided, in addition to the obvious co-starting tight end tandem of Randall Telfer and Xavier Grimble.
