18 days into USC Fall Camp, and Head Coach Lane Kiffin has yet to name a starter, nor indicate whether there is a clear favorite at this point. While he may remain mum with the media, his decisions in practice are possibly saying what his words aren’t. The Trojans held a brief practice before scurrying off the field and heading downtown to stay in a hotel for the night, as they simulate the home game experience before their final scrimmage of fall camp in the Coliseum tomorrow.
Cody Kessler got all the reps with the first team this afternoon, in an interesting development. Max Wittek did receive reps with the second team, though not nearly as did Kessler with the first. Of note, practice ended with a two-minute drill, and neither QB was able to score against the first-team defense.
Though a number of players have returned from injury, the overall tally continues to climb. Kiffin said 21 players sat out of Tuesday’s practice, though most with minor injuries. Defensive back Su’a Cravens was one such player, who has been back and forth in the last few weeks but today worked out with the rehab group. Running Back Ty Isaac also sat out of practice today–though for no official reason–and Justin Davis and Buck Allen got reps in his place. Center Marcus Martin returned with the first team O-line after being out for a day, and with RG Aundrey Walker sitting out again, the competition between him and John Martinez for the starting job leans in Martinez’s favor.
Kiffin told the media that as RB Silas Redd continues to be limited in practice, he is not sure if Redd will be available for the season opener, but he “hopes so.”
Friday’s scrimmage will be light and feature no contact, with the starters going against the service team.
