Day 16 of USC Fall Camp has come and gone, and with it, no new updates regarding the quarterbacks race. Cody Kessler did get more reps than did Max Wittek–about 31 and 17, respectively, per Ryan Abraham–but Wittek spent more time with the first team offense on Monday.
Marqise Lee, Justin Davis and Tre Madden all practiced, though in yellow no-contact jerseys. Lee told the media that he feels 100-percent–and head coach Lane Kiffin corroborated this–and Lee joked with reporters about how he doesn’t want to wear the yellow jersey anymore. Apparently in a particularly candid mood, Lee further joked that he would be tweeting USC’s starting QB selection tonight, so to pay attention to his Twitter account.
Lee also gave much praise to USC’s new-look secondary, and singled out cornerback Anthony Brown as a top performer. This particular unit is still taking shape for the Trojans, but if Lee is already calling it amazing, that’s a good sign.
New center Marcus Martin spent time with the rehab group, so in his place, Max Tuerk got reps with the first team. Giovanni DiPaolo in turn replaced Tuerk as the left guard. Aundrey Walker–who recently moved over to right guard from left tackle–left practice early, so John Martinez spent the majority of his time with the first team, in what was a makeshift offensive line for the day.
Only one scholarship tight end was available on Monday, the former defensive end, Kevin Greene. He got essentially all of the reps with the first team, save for a few that went to transfer Chris Wilson.
Freshman linebacker Quinton Powell had the plays of the day, first forcing a fumble from behind of Ty Isaac and picking off a pass from Wittek. The Trojans’ 2013 commits continue to show their worth in the early days of the season.
The Trojans move out of Fluor Tower on Monday, as USC begins its Welcome Week festivities for the new school year. The next practice for this team is slated for Tuesday, Aug. 20, at 3:15 p.m.
