The Outland Trophy Award unveiled its watch list on Thursday, and USC’s Leonard Williams, Kevin Graf and John Martinez have been named to it, as announced by the Football Writers Association of America.
This award recognizes college football’s top interior lineman, an award that USC has won only once courtesy of Ron Yary in 1967.
For the Pac-12, eight other linemen are in contention for the award, including Arizona State’s standout lineman Will Sutton. Behind the SEC, which has 16, the Pac-12 has the second-most nominees, with 12.
According to the FWAA, Florida State, USC, Stanford and Tennessee combined to put 13 players on this year’s watch list.
The list will be trimmed down to six or seven semifinalists in November, and then cut down to just three shortly after that. Each finalist will also be named an FWAA All-American.
For 68 years, the FWAA has been giving this prestigious award named for the late John Outland, an All-America lineman at the University of Pennsylvania in the early 1900s. It will be presented to the winner on Dec. 12, live on ESPN as a part of the Home Depot College Football Awards.
