Two more Trojans have been added to a preseason watch list heading into the 2013 season, this time being the dynamic tight end duo of Randall Telfer and Xavier Grimble. This pair of Trojans are in contention for the John Mackey Award, given to the nation’s top tight end.
Grimble and Telfer were left out of consideration for the award in 2012, but this year they will undoubtedly be at the top of the competition. Bringing the award home to Troy won’t be easy, however; there are five more Pac-12 athletes on the Mackey Award watch list, including headliner Chris Coyle from Arizona State, Luke Kaumatule of Stanford, Oregon’s Colt Lyerla, Jake Murphy of Utah and Washington’s Austin Seferian-Jenkins.
Seferian-Jenkins was a finalist for the award in 2012, but an offseason DUI and subsequent indefinite suspension for 2013 leaves this year’s chase wide open.
Arguably the best tight end tandem in the Pac-12–and possibly even in all of college football–Telfer and Grimble combined for 41 catches for 416 yards and nine touchdowns in 2012. That, while dealing with injuries to each of them respectively and Lane Kiffin’s penchant to target Marqise Lee on the majority of plays.
These two will play a major role in USC’s offense in 2013, and will serve as reliable targets for whichever young quarterback is chosen to assume the throne in the wake of Matt Barkley.
