USC Spring Camp 2013: Gerald Bowman To Miss Spring, Other Quick Hits

USC held its first practice of spring football on Wednesday and Lane Kiffin is already being more forthcoming with injury information.

Surprisingly, the head coach spoke liberally with the media after the first day of camp, addressing a number of injured players.

He noted that tight end Christian Thomas is no longer with the team, as a number of surgeries and medical issues have sidelined him from play. He also told the media that safety Gerald Bowman will miss all of the spring due to injury, though Kiffin did not elaborate about the nature of the injury.

Scott Starr, and walk ons John Akiba, Jeff Miller and Taylor Ross will also miss Spring Camp because of injury.

Speaking for himself, S Dion Bailey indicated that he hurt his shoulder against Syracuse in 2011, and has been playing the better part of two seasons hurt. So far, he is participating in spring camp as both a linebacker and a safety, what was his natural position before former defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin moved him down.

Other Notes:

  • Lane Kiffin said that Cody Kessler was going to be the MVP of practice, until Jabari Ruffin intercepted one of his passes late in the session.
  • In regards to the quarterback battle, Kiffin said that he is not yet prepared to say that he whether he will name a QB at the end of Spring Camp.
  • He also stated that when it comes to play-calling, he does not know whether he or an assistant coach will handle that aspect come next fall.
  • Defensive Coordinator Clancy Pendergast said that newcomer Leon McQuay III could play either cornerback or safety, but no decision has been made on it yet.
