For the second consecutive year, Lane Kiffin is in need of finding a new linebackers coach, as Bruce Feldman of CBS Sports has reported that Scottie Hazelton has taken the defensive coordinator position at Nevada. Hazelton coached just one season at USC, after a five year stint at North Dakota State that included being the Bisons’ defensive coordinator for their 2011 National Championship run.
For Hazelton, a move to an FBS defensive coordinator position is just another step of his progression, and he’s been a riser in coaching circles.
Hazelton began his coaching career at his alma mater, Fort Lewis College of Division II. Since, he’s coached at Missouri Southern State and Michigan Tech of Division II, and St. Olaf College of Division III, before his time at North Dakota State of the FCS.
After news of Monte Kiffin’s departure to the Dallas Cowboys last week, Hazelton was originally rumored to be headed to Arlington on an NFL promotion. At Nevada, Hazelton joins the staff of Brian Polian, Bill Polian’s son, and the successor to the widely influential Chris Ault.
In 2012, Hazelton took over for Joe Barry, who departed from USC to the same position with the San Diego Chargers.
