USC in the NFL: Clay Matthews is Selected to Pro Bowl

Scott Kane-USA TODAY Sports

The Pro Bowl rosters were announced this afternoon, and the USC Trojans have just one alum named to the prestigious rosters, Green Bay Packers outside linebacker Clay Matthews. This is Matthews’s fourth consecutive Pro Bowl selection, as he’s made the roster every year since being drafted in 2009.

Despite missing four games due to an injury, Matthews currently has a team-high 12 sacks for the Packers, which is good for sixth in the NFL behind Houston’s J.J. Watt, who leads the league with 20.5 sacks.

Matthews is averaging more than a sack per game for the first time in his career, and would project to be fourth in the league had he not missed time this season.

Joining Matthews at the Pro Bowl at outside linebacker are San Francisco’s Aldon Smith and Dallas’s DeMarcus Ware, both of whom with start ahead of the former Trojan, with Matthews indicated to be a reserve.

Clay Matthews was one of four Trojan linebackers drafted in the 2009 NFL Draft alongside Brian Cushing, Rey Maualuga and Kaluka Maiava. Maualuga leads all NFL Trojans with 112 combined tackles in 2012.

The Pro Bowl will be played on January 27th in Honolulu, and should the Packers reach the Super Bowl, Matthews and teammates Aaron Rodgers and Jeff Saturday will not participate.
