On Sunday, Trojans’ head coach Lane Kiffin spoke to the media about everything from Robert Woods filing NFL paperwork to his coordinators, or lack thereof. Kiffin maintained the idea that he’ll keep
dialing up single back dives into the line on third and goal calling plays for the Trojans in 2013, and mentioned that he won’t be conducting interviews for a new defensive coordinator until after the Sun Bowl, which is played on December 31st.
Ironically enough, the Trojans take on Georgia Tech in El Paso on Black Monday, the day in which plenty of coaches in the NFL could find themselves being handed pink slips.
Plus, the timing works out nicely for current Oregon State defensive coordinator Mark Banker, possibly the favorite to land the job, as he finishes his season with the Beavers on December 29th in the Alamo Bowl.
While prolonging interviews could give Kiffin the most clarity in terms of who is available and who is not, especially at the NFL level, a resolution will have to come rather quickly, with Signing Day coming just 37 days after the Sun Bowl.
Plus, there is the risk of losing out on college-level options like New Mexico State head coach DeWayne Walker, who has been mentioned by new Cal head man Sonny Dykes in his defensive coordinator search, and might not be available come New Years. The Bears ultimately hired Andy Buh as their defensive coordinator, but if Kiffin is interested in Walker and the interest with Calwas mutual, you can bet that Kiffin will at least open up the idea of getting his feet wet before the bowl game. He has to be, at least in some capacity, as Walker is too obvious of a candidate for the position.
