Senior linebacker Michael Hutchings will play in the last game of his high school career on Saturday when De La Salle challenges Corona Centennial High School for the CIF Championship.
The Spartans–and Hutchings, for that matter–are seeking their fourth straight state bowl victory.
Undefeated De La Salle beat previously unbeaten Folsom High 49-15 last week in the CIF Open Division Northern California Regional Championship Bowl Game. Their defense, led by Hutchings, is formidable, having surrendered no more than 24 points in any game this year. Against Folsom, Hutchings had two sacks and an interception.
The four-star linebacker plans to take a visit to USC once his high school season is over, with the trip set for Jan. 18. Hutchings gave his commitment to the Trojans last summer, and has shown no signs of wavering since.
Hutchings is the top linebacker in California, and his versatile play will make him a great addition to the Trojan defense. With the Trojans shopping around for a new defensive coordinator, it will be interesting to see how his physicality–which was ideal for Monte Kiffin’s defense, a scheme that favors quick, undersized linebackers like Dion Bailey–will translate.
De La Salle and Corona Centennial are slated to play at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 15. Time Warner Cable will broadcast the games live, with coverage on TWC Sportsnet.
