Lamar Dawson missed a significant chunk of the latter part of fall camp due to a torn calf muscle, but after practice on Wednesday, he said he will suiting up for USC’s season opener.
To ESPNLA.com, Dawson spoke about his status considering how much camp he missed:
“I just want to just learn my keys and my assignments and get everything down,” Dawson said. “I just need to get back on the field to get physical reps.”
In Dawson’s absence, OLB Hayes Pullard moved to the mike position and many lauded him for how quickly he picked it up. Dawson backed that notion up, saying that he too was impressed by how swiftly Pullard assumed and learned the responsibilities of the position.
“I learned a lot from Hayes,” Dawson said.
Coach Kiffin did not comment on whether Dawson will start against Hawai’i’, but he is listed on the starter in the depth chart that was released earlier this week. Dawson wears the coveted No. 55 jersey, and really started to establish himself as one of the members of that exclusive club when he shined as the starter over Chris Galippo in the final four games of the season.
The Trojans really need Dawson to get back in action as soon as possible, as the defense was already dealing with depth issues. His presence against Hawai’i will bolster the number of experienced players, and could go along way in terms of keeping the score in USC’s favor.
