Quarterbacks Cody Kessler and Max Wittek both received reps behind Matt Barkley as the offense began doing scout-team work for Hawaii. Coach Lane Kiffin said he would have an announcement about the No. 2 QB situation Tuesday.
The No. 1 USC Trojans open their 2012 college football season against the Hawaii Warriors at home on Saturday at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. Gus Johnson will call the game, which begins at 4:30 p.m. PDT on Fox, the first time USC has appeared on the network.
The most likely candidate is freshman Kevon Seymour (pronounced with an emphasized “key”), who’s been running with the second-team defense in practice for much of camp and has also taken on nickel-back duties of late.
USC is under scholarship sanctions from the NCAA and can provide only 75 to current players. The normal maximum is 85. With Negrete now on the books, the Trojans have at least 72 scholarships already locked in. As USC coach Lane Kiffin has indicated in recent days, three former walk-ons who were given scholarships in previous seasons could now get them renewed to meet the maximum.
