The Jim Thorpe Award Watch List came out on Friday, and Trojans T.J. McDonald and Nickell Robey have been named to it.
This award, named for the legendary Native American athlete, is given annually to the best defensive back in the country as determined by the Jim Thorpe Association. In 2012, Morris Claiborne of LSU earned this prestigious award.
Oregon’s John Boyett and Oregon State’s Jordan Poyer are other Pac-12 athletes named to the list.
This is the third watch list for Robey and McDonald, who were also named to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List on Thursday, and earlier this week, the Bednarik watch list. Aside from these two, Dion Bailey was also named to the Nagurski watch list, which honors the nations top defensive player. The Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club determine the winner of this award.
For the Thorpe award, Robey is one of only 15 cornerbacks on the list.
Watch List Season will pick back up again on Monday, with those for the the Rotary Lombardi and Butkus Awards being announced. Several more Trojans are expected to be named to watch lists as they continue to come out.
