USC Football Recruiting: Su'a Cravens Still Considering At Least Four Schools

Su’a Cravens, out of Murrieta, is the top athlete/safety in the country, and No. 4 on the FanSided 150, but he’s running out of time to start trimming his list of potential suitors, before he decides on June 6, his mother’s birthday. According to Brandon Huffman of Scout, Cravens has four ‘favorites’ at the moment: Ohio State, Michigan, UCLA and USC.

Cravens has long been pegged a potential silent USC commit, and has received the infamous ‘USC lock’ tag by others, although Cravens might not play out like Arik Armstead and D’Anthony Thomas, as his ties to USC lack the mainstream publicity of those two.

Cravens has tremendous talent as a two-way player, starting at both running back and safety, comparing to similar talents out of high school like Charles Woodson and Shaq Thompson.

Should Cravens wind up at Troy, he could fit in right away with Josh Shaw and Gerald Bowman in the secondary after the departures of T.J. McDonald and Jawanza Starling, but his strength also makes him a candidate to slide into an outside linebacker role with the Trojans, a la Dion Bailey. While the Trojans have benefited from using quick and undersized linebackers, most notably in 2011, with Bailey, Hayes Pullard, Jabari Ruffin and Scott Starr all being around in 2013, it makes a transition to linebacker difficult.

Cravens has the talent to beat out Shaw in 2013, and playing him at safety is the probably the best long term scenario for the Trojans, as its his natural position. While the Kiffins pushed both Robert Woods and Marqise Lee into offensive roles as opposed to playing in the secondary, Cravens’s talent, which equates to his top-flight vision and speed, is just better suited alongside a hard-hitting safety, like Gerald Bowman, for example.
